For a quadratic, the Quadratic Equation Solver gives the factored form whenever one exists, because the roots are what the factors are built from: roots p and q make the expression a(x - p)(x - q). There is no general factoring tool here, so for higher-degree polynomials take out the common factor first and look for the standard patterns by hand.
