Holiday Calculator
Every US federal holiday or England & Wales bank holiday for any year, with the observed date where one falls at a weekend, and how many days away each is. Easter is calculated rather than looked up, so the movable dates are right for any year you ask for.
Find holiday dates
Observed dates, and why they move
A holiday with a fixed date — Christmas, Independence Day — sometimes lands at a weekend, and the day off moves.
In the US, a federal holiday falling on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, and one falling on a Sunday the Monday after. In England & Wales, a bank holiday at a weekend gets a substitute day on the next working day, which is why Christmas Day on a Saturday is observed on the following Monday and Boxing Day on the Tuesday.
This calculator applies those rules and shows the observed date, because that is the date the office is actually shut.
How Easter is worked out
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March, which is why it wanders between 22 March and 25 April. This calculator computes it with the standard Gregorian algorithm rather than reading from a table, so it is right for any year, and Good Friday and Easter Monday follow from it.
What is not covered
Scotland and Northern Ireland have different bank holidays — 2 January, St Andrew's Day, the Battle of the Boyne — and are not included. Nor are US state holidays, county holidays, school holidays or company days. The lists here are the national ones only.
The rules have also changed over time: Juneteenth only became a US federal holiday in 2021, for instance. Dates well in the past are computed with today's rules and may not match what was actually observed at the time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the dates for major holidays?
Enter a year and choose the region. Every holiday for that year is listed in date order with its observed date and how far away it is.
Why is a holiday shown on a different date than I expected?
Because it fell at a weekend and the observed day moved. In the US a Saturday holiday is observed the Friday before and a Sunday holiday the Monday after; in England and Wales a weekend bank holiday takes a substitute day on the next working day.
How is the date of Easter calculated?
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon on or after 21 March. It is computed with the standard Gregorian algorithm rather than looked up, so any year works, and Good Friday and Easter Monday are derived from it.
Are Scottish and Northern Irish bank holidays included?
No. Only England and Wales. Scotland and Northern Ireland have several different bank holidays, including 2 January, St Andrew's Day and the Battle of the Boyne.
Can I exclude holidays from a working-day count?
Yes, that is what the business days calculator does. It uses the same holiday lists and tells you which ones it removed from your date range.
