A metabolic equivalent: the energy cost of an activity relative to sitting quietly. One MET is one kilocalorie per kilogram of body weight per hour, so the whole calculation is MET x weight in kg x hours.

The 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities at pacompendium.com, which is the reference researchers use. Every activity here is listed with the speed or effort its value describes, because 'cycling' on its own does not have a MET value while 'cycling at 12 to 13.9 mph' does.

It is an estimate built on population averages. Two people of the same weight doing the same activity can differ substantially, and no formula of this kind accounts for fitness, terrain or technique.

Because moving a heavier body costs more energy. The MET value is per kilogram, so the calorie figure scales directly with weight.
