Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measure to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems. It's calculated using your height and weight. While a useful starting point, BMI doesn't measure body fat directly and has limitations, especially for athletes or older adults.

This section provides calculators and information related to BMI, helping you understand its calculation, interpretation, and relevance to overall health alongside other important metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool that uses a simple calculation of your weight in relation to your height to estimate body fat. It's widely used by health professionals to classify weight categories and assess general health risks.

The standard BMI categories for adults are:

  • Underweight: below 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight: 25.0–29.9
  • Obesity: 30.0 or greater

While BMI is a useful and easy-to-use screening tool, it has limitations. It does not directly measure body fat and may not accurately reflect health for certain populations, such as athletes with high muscle mass, older adults who have lost muscle, or people with a large frame.

BMI is calculated by dividing an individual's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters (BMI = kg/m²). For imperial units, the formula is weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared, multiplied by 703 (BMI = (lbs/in²) × 703).

BMI Prime is a simple adjustment to the standard BMI. It is calculated by dividing your BMI by the upper threshold of the healthy weight category (25). A BMI Prime value less than 1.0 indicates a healthy weight, while a value greater than 1.0 indicates overweight or obesity.

Other useful metrics that can provide a more complete picture of your health include waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), body fat percentage, and basal metabolic rate (BMR). These metrics can offer additional insights into body composition and health risks. You can explore our nutrition calculators for more comprehensive health assessments.
